Hypee — Adding New Features and Improving Performance

The client is developing an iOS social video editor. He outsourced the tasks of making transitions and visual effects, not disclosing any details about the app.

We worked with a video editor functionality: transmissions, stickers, and different effects.

The client provided us only with video samples of the effects without any description of how it should work, so it took some time to choose correct mathematical formulas and their coefficients. Although our first results were approximate, we managed to bring the effects to those expected.

Our developers created lots of features for both iOS and Android versions of the app. Among the usual effects such as Zoom, Spin, Rotate, Roll, there are also sophisticated Illusion, Turbulance. X-Signal, Neon Edges, Replace Color, Glow, Glitch, etc. We implemented the option of applying several filters only to the selected area (but not to the entire screen), the overlay feature and adding stickers.

The project turned out to be challenging for the developer: creating OpenGL filters for video processing is not complicated, but porting fragment shaders from Metal (intended for Apple applications) to OpenGL has become an exciting task.

The client was satisfied with our shaders MSL and decided to add our developer to his team.

During the next phases our developers focused on internal processes and overall performance. This task included increasing the rendering speed and optimizing video decoding. We also improved the audio rendering, and the audio overlay feature with volume control became possible. Some new features were added as well (video merging feature, applying several effects on a video, saving video as a file, etc).
